Paper 1 - Part 2

PAPER 1, PART 2 


Tip: When completing a gapped-text sentences task you need to identify words such as pronouns, linking words and words that refer backwards and forwards. First read the sentences A - E below. Then the same sentences with highlighted words.  The text also has hightlights to give clues on where to put the sentences.

You will read an article where five sentences have been removed. Here are the five sentences


A Conversely a mutual liking for the speaker produced less of a connection.

B Now scientists in the USA are telling us that there's nothing better for you than a bit of a moan about someone.

C The results showed that sharing negative attitudes about others helps create friendship.

D They have concluded it is a mistake to believe that only shared positive attitudes promote closeness.

E Afterwards the participants talked to someone they had never met before about the two characters.

Gossip is Good for you 



Have you heard some interesting news about someone recently? Is it true? Do you care? People enjoy sharing gossip with friends but it often leads to difficulties or feelings of guilt. (1)_____ These experts have discovered that spreading gossip can help make people have close relationships and can, in fact, be a way of releasing tension.

The team of psychologists from the University of Oklahoma first questioned two groups of students aged 16 to 25 about views shared with their close friends.

(2) _____ On the other hand shared attitudes towards films, activities and beliefs tended to be positive.

In another part of the study 31 men and 74 women were asked to listen to a recorded conversation between two fictional characters, Brad and Melissa. (3) _____ They discussed what they had liked or disliked about the couple and if they preferred one to the other. The scientists found that partners developed a friendly relationship if they both agreed they disliked the speaker. (4) _____

'lf there is a positive side to gossip, we believe it is that shared, mild negative attitudes towards others can build a strong relationship' said the researchers. (5) _____
